Preview: Courtney Pine and Omar

Multi-instrumentalist Courtney Pine and neo-soul vocalist Omar take Black Notes From The Deep on a northern tour in December

Courtney Pine and Omar (pictured right) take their Black Notes From The Deep project to four venues across the north of the UK in December 2018, with shows in Manchester, Leeds, Kendal and Glasgow, including a two-night residency at Manchester’s Band on the Wall.

Pine was one of the first black British jazz artists to make a serious mark on the jazz scene in the 1980s when his debut album, Journey To The Urge Within reached the UK Top 40 in 1986. Since then he’s been the recipient of BBC Jazz Awards and MOBOs, nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and remained at the forefront of UK jazz, with a style that integrates modern British sounds including drum and bass and UK garage alongside soul and hip-hop.

Omar Lye-Fook broke through in 1992 with his hit single There’s Nothing Like This, which established a sound that has since earned him critical acclaim and seen him collaborate with fellow musicians including Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Carleen Anderson and Angie Stone. Pine’s latest full-length album, Black Notes From The Deep, was released last year on Freestyle Records and saw him return to the tenor saxophone for the first time in a decade. The album features Omar’s vocals and for this tour the duo will perform work from the album and their respective back catalogues with a full band.

This project brings Pine and Omar together to perform original material for the first time. Alongside Pine (on tenor saxophone and EWI) and Omar will be Robert Mitchell (piano), Vidal Montgomery (bass) and Robert Fordjour (drums).

Tour dates are as follows:

8 and 9 December - Band On The Wall, Manchester
10 December - Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
11 December - Brewery Arts Centre, Kendall
12 December - Òran Mór, Glasgow

Tickets go on general sale on Friday 4 May at 9.00am from the Band On The Wall website.
